MUSÉE D’ORSAY: WAYFINDING SYSTEM

OBJECTIVE

Redesign a museum wayfinding system to create a cohesive and intuitive user journey. Analyze current signage and architectural history to develop a new system that bridges the gap between historical structures and modern gallery needs. Establish a design intent statement, ensuring that design choice remains attached to a central narrative throughout the system’s development.

THE CHALLENGE

Transform a confusing wayfinding and brand system into an intuitive wayfinding experience that effectively guides a global audience. Analyze critical decision points and transition from language-heavy signage to a universal, symbol-based visual language. Build a system that feels connected to the building’s aesthetics and architecture while remaining distinct enough to navigate. Support a non-linear user journey, allowing visitors to explore the museum’s maze-like layout at their own pace.

THE SOLUTION

A wayfinding system inspired by the museum's history as a former railway hub. By utilizing traditional materials, the system establishes a classic yet welcoming presence that honors the building's transition from station to gallery. The final design replaces language-heavy signage with universal icons and bold typographic hierarchies, mirroring the movement of a train station to allow for a personalized, flowing museum experience.
